Frustrating Day

Well, the new tenants moved in, and the old tenants still have stuff in the garage. (It is in the garage only because dad and I put it there, otherwise it would be in the house) They were going to be at the house at 11:30 today, but they never showed up. I waited until about 8:30 pm. [Not sitting waiting.....still cleaning waiting] Utah law says you have to store their stuff in a 'safe and protected place' for 30 days. I'm not storing the smelly things that they left, which includes a fridge full of food, that is dripping and running all over the garage floor. Why would ANYONE want to be a landlord. Spare me! Now they are staying at a BEAUTIFUL motel called Country Inn by Marriott. When you are 'broke' and can't afford something, don't you go to a Motel 6, or camp out on your sister's floor? {They said they have tons of family here in the valley}........I guess that now they are on 'vacation', I checked the prices for 8 people......$250/night. Growl. And they didn't pay their water or sewer bill. Double growl. Or their rent, but that is obvious.

aha! So THAT is why you weren't sleeping last night! I'm so sorry. What a rotten law. Hard for the new tenants as well as the landlord.

Grrrrrg! If you were in Washington, you could just gump their stuff on the sidewalk.

You know you can charge a storage fee?

Charging a storage fee isn't helpful when you can't get them to pay anyway.....!!! On paper they owe money, getting it is terrible.

I started reading and thought "Garage Sale!!" Then the 30 day thing popped up...bummer. Hope your new renters are better.

I think food items are an exception in that law.

The sheriff when we had to evict a guy said that if anything looked like garbage we could throw it away. Anything that looked like it was worth more than $50 we had to keep for 30 days, but I think you're fine keeping it for 30 days past the eviction itself. Just think, one more week, only one more week.
